CLEMSON, SC – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 3-0 defeat to Clemson on Friday night at Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina.
The Mountaineers (2-1) fell behind early when the Tigers found the net in the 13th minute and never looked back. Clemson scored two more goals in the first half – in the 21st and 32nd minutes – and essentially decided the game from there. Although West Virginia limited the Tigers to just four shots in the second half, it couldn’t create a chance to close the gap and eventually lost 3-0.
In the final score, Clemson led 12-7 in shots on goal and 5-2 in shots on goal, while the Mountaineers beat the Tigers 4-3 in corner kicks. Dilary Heredia-Beltran controlled WVU’s offensive efforts with three shots, while Lilly McCarthy also added two shots on goal, one of them on target.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth relieved regular keeper Mackenzie Smith in the second half and was instrumental in keeping the Tigers away from the goal in the second period, saving one ball and intercepting several dangerous crosses from the Clemson offense.
With this victory, Clemson evens the overall standings at 2:2. For the Tigers, it was the first victory over the Mountaineers on home soil.
Next, West Virginia is on the road for a top-10 test when it travels to No. 3 Penn State on Thursday, Aug. 29. Kickoff at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania, is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
