Woman suspected of involvement in $750,000 theft at Sam’s Town last year arrested | Robberies
Earlier this month, a woman was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a $750,000 theft at Sam’s Town last summer.
According to a police report from the Metropolitan Police Department, a person posing as a casino employee persuaded a cashier’s supervisor to drive a box of cash to 36-year-old Rosa Barria at a restaurant around 3 a.m. on June 8, 2023.
Barria told police that a man paid her $300 to pick up the box and that she did not know what was in the box until after it was picked up. On August 2, she was arrested on suspicion of grand theft.
On the day of the theft, the casino supervisor received a call on one of the casino’s landline phones around 1 a.m. from someone claiming to be Sam’s Town’s IT director, Metro’s report said.
The caller, who identified himself as “Anthony Adam,” told the cage attendant that money would be needed soon to pay for a UPS delivery. “Adam” also told the cage attendant that her immediate supervisor would contact her about the payment, after which the cage attendant began receiving text messages from someone she believed to be her boss, the report said.
While on the phone with “Adam,” the casino manager took “several large wads of cash” out of an unlocked drawer and placed them in a box. At about 2:45 a.m., the casino manager then left the casino with the cash in her pickup truck, according to the report.
“Adam” had instructed the cage manager to drive to a Mexican restaurant in North Las Vegas. The cage manager arrived at the location around 3:30 a.m. and was approached by a woman and a man. She handed the cash to the woman, who she believed to be a lawyer for Sam’s Town.
The couple with the cash left the casino on foot, and the casino manager drove back to the casino because she thought she had fallen for a scam, the report said. The casino manager notified casino authorities of the incident, and Sam’s Town security called Las Vegas police around 5 a.m.
Las Vegas police were unable to determine the identity of those who stole the money until September 2023, police said. This time, the money was delivered in a box to an employee of a “mini-mart.”
The arrested convenience store employee told police that a relative named Rose Barria and a man contacted her on the evening of September 22, 2023 to pick up a box.
Because the convenience store employee was at work, Barria arranged for the box, which contained $34,000, to be delivered to the convenience store, the employee said. After the convenience store employee received the box, he had it delivered to a home in North Las Vegas.
Police asked the convenience store employee where Baria lived, and she said she lived at this house in North Las Vegas. Police also showed the convenience store employee pictures of the couple leaving the Mexican restaurant on foot, and the employee “immediately recognized” the woman as Barria, according to the report.
On August 2, Las Vegas police went to the North Las Vegas home and saw Barria getting into a car in front of the home. Police then stopped the car and arrested Barria.
Barria told police after her arrest that she picked up a box from a woman driving a pickup truck on June 8, 2023. She said she did not initially know what was in the box. She also told police that a man asked her to pick up the box and paid her $300 to do so.
Barria, who is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $30,000 bail, is scheduled to appear in court on August 20.
