What we need to see from the Buffalo Bills in the next preseason game

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW — As Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott implied after his team’s 33-6 loss to the Chicago Bears on Saturday in the first preseason game of the year, “the standard was not met.”

But the key word to remember when you read the sentence above is “preseason.” There was little to no game plan before this game. That obviously limits what the Bills can put on tape offensively and defensively for opponents to learn from early in the season. So for now, take a deep breath and relax. Let’s all move on, because this team has already done it.

As Pittsburgh heads into its second preseason game, I want to see a few things from Buffalo that will show that Saturday’s loss was just a tiny blip.

  • Perhaps the most obvious is that both the offensive line and defensive line need to make a complete turnaround from their performance on Saturday. About a year ago today, the Bills faced the Steelers in a preseason game that Buffalo lost and were dominated at the line of scrimmage. The starters prevented QB1 from being sacked yesterday, which is good, but there is still a ton of room for improvement in that regard. This team needs to win in the trenches and show a little more physicality.
  • Offensively, it felt like there was little to no rhythm to sustain the offense. Josh Allen and the starters seemed to have one late in the 1st quarter before he was subbed out and Mitch Trubisky took over from there. Even he had a couple of nice offenses that moved the ball down the field, but none of them resulted in anyone reaching the end zone.
  • Continue to give some of the guys who flashed on Saturday more chances to develop. The first name that comes to mind is Javon Solomon, who looked good in the pass rush department. I would like to see him continue to be more involved and I’m sure he will considering it’s a preseason game.
  • Tyler Bass is regaining his confidence and shooting more consistently, a welcome development to keep an eye on this preseason. Bass was 2/2 in Saturday’s loss, with his longest throw of the day being 49 yards. He’s had an up-and-down training camp, so any signs of consistency will be key.
  • STAY HEALTHY.

Buffalo will face Pittsburgh on Saturday at 7 p.m. EST at Acrisure Stadium.
