Weber’s hat trick leads Huskers to victory over CSU – University of Nebraska

Sarah Weber scored three goals for the 35th hat trick in program history as the sixth-ranked Nebraska soccer team defeated Colorado State 3-2 in front of 1,336 fans at Hibner Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Weber’s hat trick marked her first, second and third goals of the season and improved her career mark to 35 completions, which ranks her 10th in Huskers history. Florence Belzile, who finished the 2023 season second nationally with 17 assists, tallied two assists, along with Jordan Zade, who recorded her 17th and 18th career assists. Grad transfer Gracie English rounded out the group with an assist of her own, earning her the first point of her Husker career.

With the win, Nebraska improves its season record to 1-1-0, while Colorado State suffers its first loss of the year (0-1-0).

To start the scoring, Zade threw a pass to Belzile, who dribbled and passed to Weber, who collected the ball and fired it into the back left corner of the net in the 14th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, the Huskers extended their lead to 2-0 when Belzile sent a pass into the 18-yard box that was intercepted by the goalie before Weber collected it and fired it home. Colorado State had more shots on goal than the Huskers in the first half (9-6), but was unable to capitalize, and Nebraska held the point lead at halftime.

In the second half, Colorado State tied the game with goals from Mia Massey and Maggie Altman in the 63rd and 70th minutes before Weber scored the hat trick. In the 71st minute, Zade broke the game open when she dribbled across the midfield and passed to English. The Belleville, Illinois, native then sent a cross to Weber, who scored the goal.

Cece Villa started in goal for the Huskers, scored the winning goal and played the entire game along with Lauryn Anglim and Zade.

The Huskers continue their five-game home series on Thursday, August 22 at 7:05 p.m. CT. The action will stream on Big Ten Plus.
