Virginia Tech signs Connor Serven from Eastern Michigan transfer

Connor Serven is a 6-foot-8 senior entering his penultimate year. Serven played at Eastern Michigan last year and spent three years at Illinois before that.

His biggest impact came at Eastern Michigan, where he averaged 3.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 31 games. Three games of double-digit scoring, both against conference opponents. He was a very solid backup for Stan Heath’s Eastern Michigan team. In some games, his usage rate was over 20% and he was often viewed as a reliable option off the bench. His career highs in games include nine rebounds, three assists,

Connor also contributed at Illinois, playing in eighteen games over three years, totaling three points, seven rebounds and one steal.

There was an open scholarship spot on the team and Serven will be the fifteenth player on the Hokies’ roster.

Serven joins an already loaded transfer class. This offseason, Virginia Tech acquired Jaden Schutt from Duke, Tobi Lawal from VCU, Hysier Miller from Temple, Rodney Brown from Cal and Ben Burnham from Charleston.

Tobi Lawal brings a certain sparkle to the game that other players don’t. VCU Athletics measured his vertical height at 49.5 inches and was known for his excellent work above the basket. That’s not his only strength though, Lawal was more than impressive on defense as well. For the 2023-2024 season, his per-40 numbers on defense are around 1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks. Obviously, Lawal has been attracting some attention on campus and must have caught the attention of some other coaches as well.

Jaden Schutt is also an impactful transfer. He was a medical redshirt at Duke last year but played in fourteen games as a Blue Devil. He averaged 2.1 points and made 35% of his shots from beyond the three-point line. Schutt was highly touted as a recruit in high school and was one of the top 50 recruits in the country. He is an absolutely deadly shooter and shot 39% in high school. He will make an immediate impact at Virginia Tech and is extremely talented on offense.
