Venomous rattlesnake discovered in western New York State

There was a rattlesnake that was injured because it was hit by a car.

A few weeks ago, a timber rattlesnake was found in Letchworth and the DEC was called to the rescue. DEC officers took the snake to the Cornell University Animal Hospital.

Timber rattlesnakes are venomous, but experts say they don’t seek trouble around humans. They are considered an endangered species, meaning they are protected by state law. Timber rattlesnakes are actually found throughout New York State.

You will only hear their rattling when they are about to strike or defend themselves. In winter they hibernate and in the warm months you will find them high up in the trees as they are great climbers.

“Tawny rattlesnakes rarely display aggression unless defending themselves. The public is asked to leave the snakes alone and observe them from a safe distance,” the DEC said.

How big is the forest rattlesnake?

Like other members of the pit viper family, the forest rattlesnake has a large, heavy appearance. Adults typically reach lengths of 2 to 5 feet (0.76 to 1.5 meters), but there have been reports of forest rattlesnakes growing up to 6 feet (2 meters) in length,” the National Zoo website states.
