15 August 2024
RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) announced today that it is accepting online applications for several volunteer opportunities in accordance with Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order 36. Executive Order 36 officially launches the Stand Tall – Stay Strong – Succeed Together initiative to improve rehabilitation opportunities and prevent recidivism.
“My philosophy in life is ‘Win and Help Win.’ That means that if you help someone else succeed, you will succeed yourself,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “Volunteering for the Virginia Department of Corrections benefits both the population we serve and the volunteers themselves. Our Department is incredibly excited about the benefits of Governor Youngkin’s Stand Tall – Stay Strong – Succeed Together initiative and getting to know the generous volunteers who will make a huge difference for Virginia.”
Anyone wishing to volunteer must complete an application, undergo a background check, and identify any acquaintances, friends, and relatives who are incarcerated or under the supervision of VADOC. Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be considered:
- You must be at least 18 years old and have a valid government-issued ID.
- May not be under the supervision of VADOC, but exceptions may be granted.
- They must have a good reputation and character and a desire to serve humanity.
Volunteers will be considered without regard to race, ethnicity, social, economic, educational or religious affiliation.
Available volunteer roles include working in local agencies, statewide, local and national agencies, and working with reintegration resources.
