UPDATE: Columbia man charged with murdering his father and burning his body in court Monday
A Boone County grand jury has indicted a Columbia man in the gruesome murder of his father in January at a home near Vawter School and Creekfront Way in south Columbia. The grand jury indicted 31-year-old Steven Martin Strumpf on Friday on first-degree murder, armed criminal action and two other counts for the Jan. 19 shooting.th Killing his father. Friday’s indictment supersedes earlier charges in the case.
In a previously heavily redacted three-page probable cause statement from Columbia police, Strumpf allegedly admitted to stabbing his father several times in the neck and then pouring gasoline on his body and setting it on fire in the garage.
The fire caused significant damage to the home, which is located near Vawter School and Creekfront Way, a highly visible area that many residents drive by daily. Since the murder, a new roof has been built on the home and numerous other improvements have been made.
The court has ordered that Strumpf remain in custody with no bail pending trial. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. before Boone County District Judge Jeff Harris.
