PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Riley Moore, the current West Virginia State Treasurer, will run as the Republican candidate for West Virginia’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives this November.
During his time as state treasurer, Moore made several records dealing with the return of unclaimed property.
“I am proud to report that we generated $28 million last fiscal year,” Moore said. “Since I have been state treasurer, we are on track to return more than $90 million. One of the things that has contributed to our success is the West Virginia Cash Now program, where we automatically mail $105,000 checks to individuals across the state of West Virginia who have unclaimed property.”
Moore adds that under his leadership as treasurer, there has also been progress on the Hope Scholarship.
“Currently, you get $5,000 a year to apply for any educational option you want,” Moore added. “This program is designed to give choice and freedom to schools here in the state of West Virginia. We’re giving them control and letting them determine how best to educate their children.”
Moore said if elected to office, he would want to abolish the Department of Education because he wants to give control to the state.
“We need to give that money back to the states in a block grant,” Moore said. “Let’s give the states back control of that, and I think we should have a national school choice program as well. We know how to best educate our children. We don’t need the department there.”
Moore concluded by saying he wants to help West Virginia rebuild the manufacturing industry, which he said the state is historically known for.
“West Virginia is a state that has historically created things,” Moore added. “We’ve always created things here. We’re the people who mined coal, built cities, built tanks, guns and everything else. I want us to be respected for the hard work we’ve done here in the state of West Virginia to make this country so great.”
