These quaint small towns preserve Nebraska’s past while looking toward its future as a state where people can enjoy “the good life.”
Valentine’s Day
In a town called Valentine, it’s perhaps no surprise that visitors from across the country come there to celebrate many of the themed events surrounding Valentine’s Day, including sending postmarked cards and letters through the mail. This romantic town has a charming main street with several attractions such as the old post office and bank building, shops like Janine’s Flower Exchange, Bolo Beer Co., and George Paul Vinegar, and historic buildings like the Valentine Railroad Depot and Centennial Hall Museum, originally built as a high school in 1897 and rumored to be haunted. The museum has twelve rooms, each with a different theme, including the Hallock Bell Collection with over 1,700 bells, the Days of Yesteryear Room, the Military Room, and more.
Valentine is the gateway to the Niobrara National Scenic River and draws visitors year-round. Many visitors come to the town of Valentine to canoe, tube, kayak or raft the 76-mile stretch of river. At Smith Falls State Park, visitors can hike along the river to Nebraska’s highest waterfall, Smith Falls, or drive to the nearby Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge to see bison, elk and prairie dogs.
Red Cloud
Red Cloud is one of the “15 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2023” by Smithsonian Magazine and has a rich literary history. Thanks to its most famous former resident, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather, Red Cloud’s Main Street pays homage to the places important to Willa Cather’s life and writing. Take a self-guided walking tour of Red Cloud to see historic buildings and landmarks connected to Willa Cather and the town’s history. The tour includes stops at her childhood home and National Historic Landmark, built in 1859, where her bedroom is still papered with the wallpaper she chose as a teenager, the Burlington Depot, Grace Episcopal Church, the Red Cloud Opera House and the JL Milner House – the home of her childhood friends.
Explore charming shops like the Corner Nook Bookstore + Cafe, Abundant Life Honey, and dine at restaurants like Fat Fox’s and the Hometown Market in downtown Red Cloud. Five miles south of Red Cloud, you can visit the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, which preserves 612 acres of never-plowed prairie as it was in Cather’s day. Visitors can hike through the prairie to experience the landscape that inspired many of her works.
Minden
Welcome to “Nebraska’s Christmas Town,” Minden, whose bustling Main Street is especially festive during the holiday season when Courthouse Square is decorated with Christmas lights. Minden’s Light of the World Christmas play has been a tradition for over 60 years and will continue this year on November 29, 2024. The performance culminates in the lighting of over 10,000 Christmas lights around the square. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, such as the Kearney County Historical Museum and the Minden Opera House, which was built in 1891 and renovated in 2000; it serves as the community’s cultural center.
For history buffs and lovers of American culture, the Harold Warp Pioneer Village is a must-see. The museum complex showcases American history and innovation from the 1830s to the present day. It features over 50,000 artifacts in 28 buildings, including airplanes, farm equipment, and historical exhibits. See the world’s oldest Buick, a 1902 Cadillac, a 1903 Ford, and 350 other vintage cars.
alliance
The iconic City Park Fountain in downtown Alliance is the pride of the city, so much so that the fountain is part of the Alliance logo. The main drag of downtown Alliance is in and around Box Butte Avenue, a busy brick-lined street with various unique shops, cafes such as Vintage, and art installations such as Carhenge, a replica of England’s Stonehenge made entirely of vintage American cars. It’s an iconic roadside attraction and an excellent spot for quirky photos.
The Carnegie Arts Center offers residents an opportunity to express themselves culturally and experience the visual, performing and literary arts in Alliance and several surrounding towns. The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center is an innovative historical museum that explores five areas of local history: life in the Sandhills, Native American life, rural life, urban life and the railroad. Visitors to this museum and nearby Dobby’s Frontier Town can gain insight into the lives of the people who settled in the Nebraska Sandhills, now a major stopover for migratory sandhill cranes.
Chadron
Like Alliance, Chadron is a Nebraska city in the Nebraska Panhandle. This small college town’s lively downtown area features several coffee shops such as Just Love Coffee Cafe, Bean Broker Coffee House & Pub, and Scooter’s Coffee. Explore the campus of Chadron State College and see the historic Old Admin Building, built in 1916 and still a landmark of the college today. Visit the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, which honors the life and work of author Mari Sandoz, whose work is rooted in the landscape and culture of the Great Plains.
Outdoor enthusiasts can spend time at Nebraska’s oldest state park, Chadron State Park, nestled among the striking hills and canyons of Nebraska’s Pine Ridge. It’s a popular spot to camp or rent one of the 22 available cabins. You can also hike or bike along more than 100 miles of trails and old roads suitable for a range of experience levels. You can also go horseback riding and fish for rainbow trout in Chadron Creek. For an otherworldly experience near Chadron, head 40 miles northwest to Toadstool Geologic Park – famous for its moon-like rock formations that resemble toadstool mushrooms.
Nebraska City
Nebraska City is one of the oldest cities in the state, and its downtown is filled with historic buildings. Dinty Moore’s Bar, established in 1906, has been a Nebraska City landmark for over 100 years. The city is known for its rich history, particularly its location on the Missouri River, a key route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center features interactive exhibits, a theater, and an observation deck with panoramic views of the river. It’s a great place to gain insight into early exploration of the American West.
Nebraska is also known as the birthplace of Arbor Day, which was first celebrated on April 10, 1872. Today, most American states observe Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, when trees are planted. Visitors to Nebraska City can tour the 52-room estate of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day, which is now a museum filled with artifacts and exhibits about the Morton family and the history of Arbor Day. At Arbor Day Farm, visitors can explore 260 acres celebrating the legacy of Arbor Day, including the Tree Adventure, where they can walk through tree canopies, a nature experience area, and an apple orchard. AppleJack 2024, an annual festival in Nebraska City, will take place on September 21-21 and September 28-29, 2024, and will feature live music, local farm products, and plenty of apples.
