The Millersport Lions Club presents the 2024 Sweet Corn Festival from Wednesday, August 28th through Saturday, August 31st at the Sweet Corn Festival Grounds on Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport. The festival will be held Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 5-11 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The festival begins on Wednesday with the grand parade starting at 6 p.m. at Millersport High School. McGuffey Lane will entertain the crowd at 8 p.m.
On Thursday, the 2024 Sweet Corn Festival Queen and Court will be crowned beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday’s entertainment includes Shenandoah on the Brookover-Harlow Pavilion stage beginning at 8:30 p.m. The 34th Ken Keener Classic 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on the Founders Commons Stage. The 2024 Sweet Corn Festival Queen and Court will be introduced at 8 p.m. on the Brookover-Harlow Pavilion stage, followed by the Jimmy Buffet tribute act of Parrots of the Caribbean at 8:30 p.m.
During the four-day event, there will be corn eating contests, tractor pulling, carnival rides, many wonderful food vendors and entertainment on three stages. The festival will conclude at 11 p.m. on Saturday with the drawing for the $10,000 grand prize. For more information, visit www.sweetcornfest.com.
Seniors
Millersport seniors met on August 16th at the Lions Clubhouse. Nancy Davis led a prayer before the potluck lunch. President Neff presided over the business session. A grand prize was awarded to everyone. The next meeting will be held on Friday, September 6th at 12:00 noon at the Lions Clubhouse.
School activities
On Tuesday, August 13th, Laker Stadium hosted an open house and community festival. The festival began with the introduction of the fall athletes and featured games and food for the whole family.
The varsity football team travels to New London for the first football game of the season on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Board of Education has approved Mid-State League rates for the 2024-2025 school year (tournaments excluded): JV/Varsity sporting events – $7 for adults/$5 for high school students, Junior High sporting events – $5 for adults/$3 for high school students, Golden Buckeye – $3 for all sporting events.
School Board
The Walnut Township School Board met on August 12th in the Elementary Media Center. During the public participation time, Ms. Phillips expressed her appreciation for the positive tone at the opening assembly and teacher meetings.
Superintendent Radulovich reported on the Buildings and Grounds/Transportation/Maintenance Committee meeting. Several projects are underway or in the planning stages. She also reported on the staff meeting, the awards given for their service, and that Friday, September 27th will be a staff training day due to the Luke Bryan concert.
Elementary School Principal Kim Mathews reported on enrollment in the elementary school building and the open day on August 13th.
Mike Collins, principal of Junior/Senior High, reported on a positive start, discipline and career paths.
The CEP program, which would provide free lunch to all students, was discussed and documents were submitted.
