The choice of location for nuclear reactors in Nebraska depends on the wishes of the local population

KEARNEY — A man who has worked behind the scenes on the Nebraska Public Power District’s project to build modular nuclear reactors expects a long battle to reach a final decision on where to build the power-generating facilities.

“It takes a long time for them to put the spades in the ground,” said Trevor Lee, executive director of the Development Council for Buffalo County.

On Thursday, the NPPD and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development announced that Kearney, Lexington and Holdrege are among 16 finalists for the sites of the small nuclear reactors that the NPPD wants to deploy.

In addition to Kearney, Lexington and Holdrege, the remaining 16 finalists are Beatrice, Brownville, Fremont, Grand Island, Hallam, Hastings, Nebraska City, Norfolk, Plattsmouth, Rushville, Sutherland, Valentine and Wauneta.

NPPD expects that demand for electrical energy will increase rapidly in the near future and believes that NPPD’s need for increased generating capacity could be safely met by smaller modular reactors.

“This significant milestone underscores Kearney’s position as a leader in innovation and growth as the city is on the verge of becoming home to a small modular reactor, a revolutionary advancement in nuclear energy technology,” Lee said in a joint press release from the Development Council and the City of Kearney.

According to Thursday’s announcement, Kearney’s selection as a finalist is a testament to the city’s exceptional quality of life, robust infrastructure and visionary leadership.

“Not only is our community known for its forward-thinking approach, it also offers unparalleled healthcare, outstanding educational opportunities, recreational opportunities and a thriving tourism industry – all factors that make Kearney an ideal location for pioneering projects like this,” the announcement said.

“The city’s strategic geographic location and state-of-the-art infrastructure make it an optimal candidate for hosting such advanced energy technology and enable Kearney to maintain its position as an economic center in the greater Nebraska region,” the announcement said.

While being selected as a finalist is an exciting development, the City of Kearney and the Development Council stated that further research, analysis and, most importantly, public input are essential to determine if this opportunity is in the best interest of the community, its businesses and its residents.

“As we move into this next phase, it is critical that we engage with our community to gather diverse perspectives,” said Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse.

“We want to ensure that every decision is based on the values and priorities of the people who call Kearney home. Kearney’s strong sense of community and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly guide us in making the right choice for our future,” said Clouse.

“We are committed to working closely with NPPD and DED in a thorough and transparent process,” Lee said. “We will thoroughly examine every facet of this opportunity – from its economic potential to its environmental and social impacts – to ensure that any decisions made are truly in the best interest of the community.”

According to Lee, Kearney has a long tradition of “responsible growth” and a willingness to invest in its employees.

“We believe Kearney is well positioned to support this transformative project as long as it aligns with our community’s vision.”

Lee expects the second phase of the site study to be completed by the end of 2026.
