VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – Virginia Beach police were involved in a shooting with a suspect early Tuesday morning, a news release said.
Officers responded to a call reporting shots fired in the area of Bonney Road and Trace Court at 3:42 a.m.
When police arrived, they were “confronted” by Elijah Santiago, 18, who pointed a handgun with an extended magazine at the officers, police said. They shot the suspect, but police say no one was injured in the incident.
“Yeah, I don’t know what caused it, but it woke me up,” said Darris Gholston, a neighbor.
Gholston said his neighborhood is normally quiet, but he was awakened by gunshots and police lights.
He said he once heard police ordering someone to come out of an apartment with their hands raised.
“A woman and a man came out, then they told another person to come out. Then I heard maybe four or five more shots, then some commotion, people running and scurrying around,” Gholston said.
Eventually, Santiago turned himself in and was taken into custody by police. He was charged with four counts of assault on a police officer, extended magazine in public, discharging a firearm within city limits, brandishing a gun, and soliciting a fake purchase.
There appeared to be bullet holes on the outside of the house.
Dominion teams were also on site because a ricochet hit a transformer and caused mineral oil to leak out.
About 10 households were without power, but power was restored after 12:30 p.m.
The incident occurred in front of the Virginia Beach Antique Mall. The street was closed during the police investigation. It was reopened around noon.
