Russell Wilson is scheduled to make his debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills “barring any setbacks,” head coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday (h/t Brooke Pryor of ESPN).
According to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, Wilson sustained a calf injury while pushing a sled during a conditioning test on July 24.
The veteran quarterback returned to practice on a limited basis on July 30 and was fully involved in the week leading up to the game against the Bills.
Justin Fields started the Steelers’ season opener on August 9, when they lost 20-12 to the Houston Texans.
Fields, currently listed as the second quarterback behind Wilson, is expected to play “significantly more” than Wilson on Saturday, Rich Walsh reported for KDKA News.
Tomlin told reporters Thursday that Wilson had a “good week of practice” (h/t Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan).
“He’s been really into it and has had some really good days,” Tomlin said. “With each day that goes by, it’s less of an issue.”
Tomlin said, according to Myles Simmons of NBC Sports, that Wilson and the other Steelers starters are expected to play about four drives.
In the Steelers’ last preseason game, Fields completed 5 of 6 passes for 67 yards in three series. The former Chicago Bears quarterback also dropped two snap exchanges with center Nate Herbig and was sacked twice on third downs.
Tomlin said after the loss that the fumbles “ruined a lot of good things in the first few drives,” Pryor said.
The Steelers head coach said last week that there is still a “competition” between the two quarterbacks and that preseason performance is more important than training camp performance.
“What happens in the stadium carries more weight than what happens in a practice environment because it’s more like a game,” Tomlin said before the opening week of preseason, according to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.
Wilson has indicated he wants to see action in the preseason, and the Steelers are likely just as eager to give the veteran quarterback a chance to work with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in a game.
The former Seattle Seahawk and Denver Bronco was already listed as QB1 in the team’s first unofficial preseason roster, and Wilson now has a chance to cement that role with a strong preseason debut in Pittsburgh.
