The Steelers’ training camp is officially over, but the fun is just beginning. One day after the final camp practice at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Mike Tomlin’s team was back home at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh for their joint practice against the Buffalo Bills.
The Steelers are trying to get back into their stride after a sluggish season opener against the Texans. As they prepare to face the Bills on Saturday – the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year – Coach Tomlin is naming a starting quarterback for the second week of preseason play and the offense will be in full swing against Buffalo. Here’s the latest news from the Steelers.
After Pittsburgh’s joint practice with the Bills, Mike Tomlin answered questions about the upcoming preseason game. He also answered the question we all wanted to know: Who will start at quarterback in the Steelers’ second preseason game?
After some snooping, Tomlin confirmed that Russell Wilson will make his first start on offense this Saturday against the Bills, reports Brooke Pryor of ESPN.
The decision to give Wilson the green light means the former Pro Bowl quarterback is ready. His availability comes at a good time, as the Steelers want to see what the veteran can show in the team’s dress rehearsal game in Week 2 of the preseason. Fields could also win some series with the starters, but will be used after Wilson against the Bills.
The Steelers needed an improvement on offense after their preseason performance against the Texans, and that’s exactly what they got in joint practice with the Bills. Even though it was just one practice, Pittsburgh’s quarterbacks often made seven throws, and Justin Fields capped off his two-minute practice with a touchdown.
Now the Steelers have to take this into the preseason and show signs of life early. Pittsburgh scored zero points in the first half of last week’s first friendly against Houston.
According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a potential Brandon Aiyuk trade would have no impact on George Pickens’ future in Pittsburgh. Sources close to Dulac have told him that the Steelers view Pickens as their No. 1 receiver and “intend to pay him accordingly.”
According to this report, the Steelers would be willing to pay money to both Aiyuk and Pickens if Pittsburgh could complete a trade with the 49ers.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to face the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the preseason, the Atlanta Falcons have been busy bolstering their roster ahead of their Week 1 home game against the Steelers.
After trading a future third-round pick for edge rusher Matt Judon, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed that the Falcons have agreed to a one-year deal that brings Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons to Atlanta.
These two roster moves are designed to fill the biggest holes on the Falcons’ roster heading into the season opener. Now offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has two more talented players to compete against when they travel to Atlanta for their first game of the season.
