Souderton School Board Member Under Fire After Vice President Harris’ Comment – NBC10 Philadelphia
The director of a Montgomery County school board is coming under increasing pressure to resign because he allegedly wrote an offensive post about Vice President Kamala Harris.
The controversy began on social media but took center stage at the Souderton Area School District’s regular board meeting Wednesday night.
In late July, school board director William Formica allegedly posted a derogatory sexual comment about Vice President Kamala Harris on social media. His comment was deleted, but not before people took screenshots of it and shared it all over the internet.
On Wednesday evening, the board — at which Formica was not present — announced that the meeting was not scheduled to discuss Formica’s comments. The crowd began booing, and members stood up and left the meeting.
“I have a daughter. I don’t want her to grow up thinking that men like her are right and that she can only reach positions of power through hard work, but also in other ways,” said Corinne Degeiso, a member of the Souderton Area for Responsible Leadership.
The school board issued a statement saying Formica used inappropriate language and poor judgment and asked for “some time to process this situation.”
A petition on Change.com calling for Formica’s resignation has more than 1,800 signatures, but there are also people who believe he should not resign.
While most say his past social media comments were in poor taste, they are pleased with the way he has handled other school board matters.
“He handles a lot of the district’s financial management. He’s very competent at that,” said Kaitlin Destine of Valley Conservative Voice.
“He was also for parents’ rights, for protecting children and for policies that would make that happen. And that hasn’t changed,” said Bruce Hagan of Indian Valley Conservative Voice.
A rally is planned for August 29, and many parents say they will again push for his resignation.
NBC10 reached out to Formica for comment to see if he would attend the action meeting, but no response was received.
