August 18 – SFCC offers students free access to the fitness center

All students taking at least one credit course will have free access to Santa Fe Community College’s William C. Witter Fitness Education Center this semester, the college announced.

“This initiative is designed to support the health, well-being and overall college experience of our students,” SFCC President Becky Rowley said in a press release. “Research shows that regular physical activity can reduce stress, improve mood and increase cognitive performance, all of which are critical to academic success.”

Eligible students have free access to the main fitness center area, including cardio equipment, weight machines, and free weights, upon presentation of their student ID at the front desk. Access to other areas and fitness classes may require additional fees or separate registration.

Volunteer literacy workers hold fall trainings

Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe will be holding training for new English as a Second Language tutors in September. New tutor orientation will be via Zoom on September 19, while in-person training will be September 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NM colleges rank high in WalletHub rankings

Three New Mexico colleges made it into the top 20 community colleges, according to WalletHub: Santa Fe Community College ranked fourth, Southeast New Mexico College in Carlsbad ranked fifth, and San Juan College in Farmington ranked 15th.

According to the rankings, New Mexico has the second-best community college system in the country, with only Maryland doing better than the state.

Santa Fe Striders announces scholarship winners

Santa Fe Striders has announced the winners of its 2024 scholarships. This year, the organization split $7,000 among five scholarship recipients who participated in cross country or track and field during high school.

This year’s recipients are:

* Greta Smith, graduate of Santa Fe High School.

* Anna Wetteland, graduate of Los Alamos High School.

* Marisa Martinez, Pojoaque Valley High School graduate.

* Emma St. Peter, graduate of the Academy of Technology and Classical Studies.

* Charli Koseoglu, graduate of the Academy of Technology and Classical Studies.
