PETERSBURG, Va. — A four-person shooting that occurred on the campus of Virginia State University Wednesday, injuring four people, is the eighth shooting observed on college campuses across the state in the past four years, according to data from Everytown for Gun Safety.
Data shows that Wednesday’s shooting at VSU is also the first shooting on a Virginia college campus this year.
Last year, according to statistics, there was only one shooting on a college campus in Virginia, when a 19-year-old opened fire during Virginia Commonwealth University’s graduation ceremony.
Two people were killed and five others injured in the shooting.
In 2022, there were a total of five shootings on college campuses in the state, according to data, one of which occurred at Norfolk State University, where a student was injured by a ricochet bullet.
In November 2022, three people were killed and two injured at the University of Virginia when a former football player opened fire on a bus.
According to statistics, more people were killed in this shooting than in any other shooting on a college campus across the state in the past four years.
Since 2021, at least seven people have died and 13 have been injured in shootings on college campuses across Virginia.
