SEDALIA — Republican Senator Josh Hawley and Democratic challenger Lucas Kunce clashed at the Missouri State Fair. The two candidates for Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat sparred over issues during the Governor’s Ham Breakfast in Sedalia.
Hawley and Kunce faced each other and discussed whether a debate should be held here at the fair. Hawley came to the ham breakfast and had only one thing on his mind. He wanted to confront his political opponent.
Hawley found Kunce among the 1,200 people attending the Governor’s Ham Breakfast and immediately asked him to debate with him across the street at the Missouri State Fair. Missouri State Fair officials actually allowed them to debate on the fairgrounds.
Hawley said, “Looks like I’m not going to get a debate. I just think it’s sad that he doesn’t want to debate. He’s been in his basement for two weeks. He’s spent the last two weeks insulting the Farm Bureau. Some of you have now seen this letter where he’s threatening the Farm Bureau with legal action. That’s the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever heard in a farm state. This is a farm state. It’s absolutely unreal.”
Kunce immediately responded to Hawley’s allegations. Kunce said, “That’s unrealistic because it’s a lie. We didn’t threaten the Farm Bureau. He jeopardized their C-5 status by working with them in violation of FCC rules. The ridiculous thing here is that we have a man who can’t agree to five televised debates because he won’t own up to his past.”
Kunce challenged Hawley to five media-organized debates, including one on Fox News Channel. Hawley had not said whether he would accept Kunce’s offer.
