Safety appeal at the ‘pristine’ Supa Skips landfill site damaged by fire

The owners of a landfill where a major fire raged for two weeks have been “reminded” of their safety obligations, a city councilor said.

After a fire broke out at the Supa Skips site in Lancaster last December, buildings were demolished and tonnes of waste removed.

The council, which contributed £1.4 million to the firefighting effort, said the privately owned site appeared to be “largely untouched” eight months later.

Councillor Phillip Black, Chairman of Lancaster City Council, said the company Supa Skips, which has been in the liquidation process since April“have a duty to ensure that their site is maintained safely and does not pose any potential risks to the community.”

“In addition to reminding them of their obligations, we have also requested a meeting to further discuss the matter and learn more about their plans for the long-term future of the building,” he added.

The Council said it £764,916 recovered of its contribution from the government “after a period of intensive lobbying”.

A representative of the agency added that the site on Port Royal Avenue in the Lune industrial park would continue to be monitored.

They also said that the smoke cloud changed direction regularly due to weather changes during the fire and “no area was exposed to smoke for a prolonged period – (therefore) the health risk is significantly lower.”
