PITTSBURGH (AP) — Russell Wilson is expected to be in the lineup when the Pittsburgh Steelers host buffalo on Saturday evening.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday that Wilson will play with the regulars as long as he doesn’t suffer any setbacks from the calf injury that has slowed him during training camp.
“He’s had a couple of really good days (and) with each day that goes by (the injury) becomes less of an issue, so we’re excited for him to be part of this home game,” Tomlin said.
Pittsburgh signed the nine-time Pro Bowler to a one-year deal in March. Tomlin has been saying for months that the 35-year-old Wilson is in “pole position” to be the starter when the regular season begins. That hasn’t changed, even though Wilson has ceded a lot of playing time to Justin Fields during training camp to deal with a calf injury.
Tomlin expects the regular players to play about four series against Buffalo, but stressed that the plan is not set in stone.
Fields was efficient in Pittsburgh’s season opener against Houston, completing 5 of 6 passes for 83 yards, but also struggled in snap exchanges with center Nate Herbig. Fields will get playing time against the Bills, but how much will likely depend on what happens when Wilson is in the game.
