PITTSBURGH (AP) — Russell Wilson will start the Pittsburgh Steelers’ final preseason game against Detroit on Saturday.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday that Wilson and all healthy starters will play against the Lions. However, Tomlin declined to provide any further details on how long Wilson or the other starters could play.

Tomlin added that there has been “no change” in the quarterback rankings. Wilson has been listed ahead of Justin Fields since training camp began last month, despite Wilson’s availability being limited by a calf injury.

Neither Wilson nor Fields have led the Steelers into the end zone when they have been in the game, but everyone involved is hoping to change that before the regular season begins on Sept. 8 in Atlanta.

“I want to see the fruits of the labor that I’ve seen here on the practice field,” Tomlin said. “We’ve had some really great practice days and shown really good consistency and fundamentals and spectacular playmaking skills, but I haven’t seen that in the stadium yet.”

First-year offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said earlier this week he shortened Wilson’s game plan in a 9-3 loss to Buffalo to protect Wilson’s calf. Tomlin said he doesn’t believe there will be any “schematic limitations” for Wilson against Detroit.

Although Tomlin has not yet announced a winner of the competition, he has claimed for months that Wilson is in “pole position” to start.

Fields isn’t trying to focus on the competition for the quarterback position because the decision is out of his hands. He believes he’s shown the coaching staff what he can do and that his mobility gives him a dimension that’s no longer part of Wilson’s standard arsenal.

The bigger challenge for Fields has been his passing as he tries to figure out when to be aggressive and when to play it safe.

“There are plays where you’re just looking to finish and there are plays where you’re trying to throw down the field. So you have to know when the right time in the game is to throw down the field and make a play,” Fields said. “And you also know that there are other times where you just have to get rid of the ball or try to finish or get back on track to score some points.”
