Rugby legend Percy Montgomery rescues stranded baby dolphin on Cape Town beach

A famous rugby player has become a hero after rescuing a baby dolphin stranded on a beach near Cape Town in Africa earlier this month.

Springbok rugby world champion Percy Montgomery was filmed picking up the stranded dolphin and returning it to the water in two separate attempts.

The dolphin was then observed to swim away successfully.

Eyewitness Doris van Niekerk recorded the incident.

According to Whale and Dolphin Conservation, strandings of individual dolphins can occur if the animal is old, sick, injured and/or disoriented.

Montgomery holds records for both caps and points as a rugby player and is known for his contribution to South Africa’s victory over England in the 2007 Rugby World Cup final.
