Riverhounds and Detroit City FC reach goalless draw

FINAL STANDARD: Riverhounds SC 0, Detroit City FC 0

USL Match Center / Match Statistics

In a match between two of the USL Championship’s most defensively strong teams, good chances were hard to come by, and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC played out a scoreless draw with hosts Detroit City FC on Wednesday night at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, MI.

With this result, the Hounds (26 points) remain four points behind City FC (30 points) and extend their winning streak to five games (3-0-2). Goalkeeper Eric Dick saved one goal and secured his eighth clean sheet of the season.

In the last three seasons since the two clubs began playing in 2022, the two clubs have drawn at Keyworth Stadium, with neither team managing to score in the last two matches.

The Hounds started the game solidly in a 5-3-2 formation, but failed to get a single shot on goal in the first half despite playing a fair amount of direct play (38 long passes in the first half) and attempting to attack from the width, sending in 11 crosses while forcing Detroit into a dozen clearances.

With their backs to the home crowd, Detroit City FC produced a more inspired performance in the first half, including the only shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but Hounds goalkeeper Eric Dick’s quick reaction denied Elvis Amoh a close-range chance.

Pittsburgh’s attack became more active in the second half. Bradley Sample’s attempt was blocked early on and EJ Johnson’s long-range shot went just wide in the 57th minute.

Pittsburgh’s first shot on goal came from a free kick by Kenardo Forbes in the 63rd minute, which also led to a scrum in front of the goal and a yellow card for Hounds defender Pat Hogan.

The Hounds applied even more pressure in the final moments of the game, as they finished the half (and the game) with a total of nine shots.

A corner kick opportunity for the Hounds in the 93rd minute fell to midfielder Jackson Walti, who attempted to fire a volley that flew wide of the goal, but Suber did not react quickly enough to direct the ball towards the goal.

Pittsburgh used all five of its scheduled substitutions. Kazaiah Sterling and Langston Blackstock came on in the 64th minute, Robbie Mertz and Jackson Walti came on in the 80th minute. The last substitute was Babacar Diene, who came on in the 89th minute.
