Rise in violence: Denver suburb grapples with weekend shootings

A weekend of violence in the Denver suburb of Commerce City ended with four men dead and a woman hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Police said Sunday that one of the people involved in one of the cases was later found dead after shooting herself.

Another person was shot and three others injured during two clashes in the Denver-area city of Aurora on Sunday.

A series of shootings and stabbings in Denver over the weekend left one dead and six injured, authorities said.

“On average, there are maybe five or six murders a year,” she explained. “We’re now talking about four murders and one person in critical condition within 39 hours… The fact that the crimes are not related is really even more puzzling.”

The possible reasons for the shooting were kept secret.

The first incident occurred Friday night in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven convenience store in Commerce City. After the man and woman were shot, the man died. According to Small, the woman was still in critical condition in the hospital on Sunday morning.

A man who was driving a truck involved in the shooting later eluded police officers who tried to talk to him; he was found dead on Sunday morning; he had committed suicide.

On Saturday night, a man was shot in the parking lot of a public park in Commerce City that includes a swimming pool. One person was arrested, but Small declined to provide further information.

Later that evening, the gunshot tracking system in Commerce City alerted authorities to gunshots during a shootout. Authorities say officers entered a stolen car containing three passengers who fled and later crashed. Inside the car, a male passenger was found dead from a gunshot wound.

After the collision, the driver and a second passenger sustained injuries and were hospitalized. A man who had been shot and killed was discovered in the yard of a home by police officers who returned to the scene of the shooting, according to Small.

She claimed that it was assumed that the victims and others involved in the case were minors.

According to Small, there is no known connection between the shootings in the residential area, the park and the supermarket.

She declined to provide any information and explained that the investigation was still ongoing.

According to authorities, the fatal shooting occurred around 2 a.m. in the parking lot of a nightclub in Aurora. Not all details of the death were immediately released.

Authorities said a second victim, a 34-year-old man, was shot multiple times but was able to get to the hospital on his own and is expected to survive. No arrests have been made.

Around the same time, a man was hospitalized with potentially fatal injuries after a shooting at an Aurora apartment complex, police said. Investigators said the second man who was stabbed had a chance of survival.
