Prosecutor: Suspect in fatal shooting of Virginia deputy sheriff dies in hospital

MARION, Va. – The man charged in the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in southwest Virginia and wounding of another deputy earlier this month has died at a Tennessee hospital, a local prosecutor said.

Timothy Wayne Goodman, 65, of North Carolina, died early Friday at Johnson City Medical Center, according to a news release from Smyth County Attorney Phillip Blevins.

Goodman was charged with murder in the Aug. 9 killing of Smyth County Deputy Hunter Reedy, as well as four counts of attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime, Blevins said previously. The other injured Smyth County deputy was released a day after the shooting and is recovering at home, news outlets reported.

Goodman was hospitalized after he was also shot during the altercation with officers, according to police.

Goodman’s death “closes an important chapter in this matter, but our commitment to support Deputy Reedy’s family, the other officers involved and the entire law enforcement community is stronger than ever,” Blevins said in the release.

Authorities said the shootings occurred during a traffic stop involving Reedy with Marion police officers. An investigation revealed that Goodman was involved in an altercation with Marion police officers and sheriff’s deputies prior to the shooting, according to Virginia State Police.

Reedy’s funeral was planned for Saturday at a church in Chilhowie. Reedy, 28, attended high school in Chilhowie and was a police officer there before joining the sheriff’s department. He was married and had three children.
