PITTSBURGH– The Pittsburgh Steelers will start Russell Wilson at quarterback on Saturday (7 p.m.) against the Buffalo Bills, provided he does not suffer any setbacks due to his calf injury, head coach Mike Tomlin said.
The Steelers plan to use Wilson and the starters for about four series, but that could change depending on how the game goes. Wilson will get the starting opportunity against the Bills after Justin Fields started against the Houston Texans.
Wilson is listed as a starter, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets that job. Fields and Wilson alternated as first-team quarterback during a joint practice with Buffalo at Arcisure Stadium on Thursday, a day after the Steelers wrapped up training camp in Latrobe.
Wilson ended up being the first-team quarterback with the most reps, as he took first-team reps on seven throws. Fields led the second-team offense on a two-minute drive.
This will be Wilson’s first game in a Steelers uniform. Wilson said on Wednesday that if he were to play, he would not be afraid of re-injuring his calf.
“I don’t play out of fear. I never have,” Wilson said. “You play smart, just like in a regular game. You have to know when to lay down. You have to know when to slide, go out of bounds and all those things.”
“This is my 13th year. I don’t strap on the pads and just get ready to go out and play scared. Anyone who knows me knows I don’t think that way. So when that’s the case, I’ll be ready to go.”
Fields will play after Wilson, but Tomlin did not say to what extent he expects Fields to play after Wilson and the first team.
