PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers will see one of their new quarterbacks for the first time this weekend when they face the Buffalo Bills at Acrisure Stadium.
During his press conference following a joint practice with the Bills on Thursday, head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that Russell Wilson will make his debut with the Steelers on Saturday. He is expected to play four series with the starters, barring any issues, while he recovers from a calf injury that has plagued him since the start of training camp.
Wilson suited up for Pittsburgh’s first preseason game against the Houston Texans last weekend and participated in warmups, but never played as Justin Fields played three series before Kyle Allen ended the game.
Fields has earned a starting spot throughout training camp as Wilson’s injury limited him from playing time, despite being listed as a starter on the team’s official roster. The Steelers will likely proceed cautiously while Wilson returns to form, and the team has not yet made a statement on who will be the starter during the regular season.
Tomlin has not announced his plans regarding Fields’ playing time against Buffalo, but it is safe to assume he will replace Wilson, while Allen should also get some playing time again.
Pittsburgh signed Wilson to a one-year, $1.2 million deal this offseason after he was released by the Denver Broncos. The Broncos will have to pay him around $38 million after giving him a massive $242 million contract extension in 2022.
