PITTSBURGH– The Pittsburgh Steelers, like all other 31 teams in the NFL, must trim their 91-man roster down to 53 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday. Pittsburgh has had 91 players on the field throughout the preseason and training camp and has evaluated those players to get to this point.
In a new twist, the Steelers will have a little more flexibility in the rules this season. For one, they can immediately bring back two players from injured reserve, and those players do not have to be on the original 53-man roster. The same goes for suspended players and those placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
The Steelers have several candidates that could go on the injured list. Offensive tackle Dylan Cook has a foot injury that will keep him out of action for an extended period of time. He will likely be one of the two on the injured list. However, outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon (foot/ankle) and safety Ryan Watts (stinger) appear to be two other candidates that could be on the team’s first injured list.
Rookies Roman Wilson and Troy Fautanu appear to be making progress toward returning and are unlikely to be placed on the injured list. In the meantime, the other two list items will also be useful.
Veteran linebacker Cole Holcomb will almost certainly be placed on the PUP list. Meanwhile, cornerback Cam Sutton is suspended for the first eight games of the NFL season for violating the NFL’s conduct rules. The cuts have begun and will occur throughout Tuesday, as the team is scheduled to practice at 10:45 a.m.
After the first wave of release on Monday, the Steelers have 80 players on the roster and must release 27 more. They can add 17 players to the practice squad because outside linebacker Julius Welschof received an international waiver.
