Pittsburgh Secret Service agents placed on leave after Trump assassination attempt

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — More than a month after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, the Secret Service has fired the head of its Pittsburgh office and several other agents on vacation.

Sources confirm that the special agent in charge from Pittsburgh, three other agents from the Pittsburgh field office and an agent from Trump’s department have been placed on leave as a result of the Secret Service investigation.

Thomas Crooks opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler County on July 13 Kill Corey Comparatore and three people injured, including Trump.

Butler Township Manager Tom Knights says he is not surprised by the move, saying it may show some sense of responsibility.

“I am pleased that every report received has been given the credibility necessary for the investigation,” Knights said.

“I certainly appreciate the factual presentation of everything that comes to light,” he added.

When asked if he thought there was political pressure, Knights replied: “Oh, I’m sure there was, but I still believe the integrity of the investigation was maintained.”

Leslie Osche, chairwoman of the Butler County Commissioners, is also not surprised.

“Everyone wants an answer, we all want an answer. We all want it now, because that’s how we are as humans. Today, everyone wants to know everything,” said Osche.

“I am optimistic that we are taking steps to improve and that every agency at every level should follow our example,” Osche said.

A Secret Service spokesperson responded to the news in a statement: “We are investigating the processes, procedures and factors that led to this operational failure. The U.S. Secret Service requires its personnel to adhere to the highest professional standards and any identified and proven violation of policy is investigated.”

The news comes after U.S. Senator Josh Hawley sent a letter to acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr. saying a whistleblower testified that Secret Service headquarters told agents working the Trump rally not to request additional staff resources for the rally and warned that such requests would be denied. Rowe has testified before Congress that no staff were ever denied.

“Of course there should be accountability, but I think it starts with leadership,” Osche said. “I think leadership at every level should take responsibility for this, at every level, local, state and federal.”

Osche said it is the responsibility of the Secret Service to protect the “high-risk officer.”

“The responsibility for planning the event lies with the secret service,” said Osche.
