Man suffers hip injury in fall in Frick Park

An 85-year-old man is in stable condition after falling on a trail in Frick Park on Monday morning, Pittsburgh police said.

Paramedics and park rangers arrived at the park around 8 a.m. The man was found about a quarter mile further into the park along the Clayton Hill Trail with a hip injury.

The man was treated for his injuries at the scene before being transported by SUV to a medical unit at the Frick Park Nature Center on Beechwood Drive. He was then taken to a hospital, police said.


Pittsburgh firefighters battle two vehicle fires in three days

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the Pittsburgh Fire Department responded to two vehicle fires that damaged three vehicles within three days.

Around 5 a.m. Saturday, two vehicle fires were reported along the 1100 block of Paulson Avenue. The vehicles belonged to different owners. The fires are considered suspicious and remain under investigation, police said.

At around 4:30 a.m. Monday morning, firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the 5100 block of Cypress Street. An electric vehicle had caught fire and damaged overhead wires, police said.


Grieving Pittsburgh family asks for help paying for girl’s funeral

The family of a 9-year-old Pittsburgh girl who died after being hit by a car while riding her bike is asking for help paying her funeral expenses.

Courtney Carter was hit by a car on Rosedale Street near Tacoma Street in Homewood around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. She died at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

A fund set up by the House of Law Funeral Home had raised nearly $8,000 from more than 130 people by Tuesday morning.

The money is needed by Wednesday before the viewing can take place Friday evening at the funeral home in Penn Hills, TribLive news partner WTAE reported. The funeral is planned for Saturday morning at Bethany Baptist Church in Homewood.


Crafton police search for missing man

Crafton police are trying to locate a man whose family reported him missing.

Drew Arley Thomas has not been heard from since Aug. 16, when he texted his mother, police said. His phone has been unreachable since then.

Thomas is described as white, 6’1″ tall, with a beard and weighing approximately 175 pounds. He may be wearing dark pants or jeans and a yellow hoodie.

It is believed that he often spends time in the Point State Park area or in downtown Pittsburgh.

West Liberty Avenue closed due to accident repair

West Liberty Avenue at Cape May Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood will be closed in both directions for an extended period of time during recovery efforts following an early morning accident, Pittsburgh police said.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were on duty at around 4 a.m. when a single vehicle overturned. A woman suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, police said.

Police said several power lines had fallen in the area.

Motorists are advised to look for alternative routes.
