Pittsburgh area declares itself an official Bigfoot sanctuary

DERRY, PA — You’ve probably never heard of Derry. It’s a small community of about 2,600 people in Westmoreland County, about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Derry authorities hope that by including Bigfoot, they will make more people aware that this is a real place.

The City Council this week on Tuesday approved a proclamation by Mayor Grant Nicely declaring the creature, whose existence has never been proven, the municipality’s official cryptid.

Wait. There’s more.

According to the proclamation, Derry is now an official Bigfoot sanctuary and the community will be known as the “Gateway to the Mysterious Chestnut Ridge.”

According to the Latrobe Bulletin, Derry authorities are looking to capitalize on decades of sightings of the large, hairy creature in the county, with sightings particularly frequent in the Chestnut Ridge area.

The Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society (yes, there is such an organization) has not yet commented on the county’s action.

The volunteer group says its mission is to objectively investigate, research and collect data on the Bigfoot phenomenon in Pennsylvania. The society collects data from sighting reports, encounters and field expeditions.

County officials are considering teaming up with the state company to open a Bigfoot museum where they could learn more about the big guy.

Attempts to reach Bigfoot for this story were unsuccessful.
