Orientation events planned for new students | Newsroom

As the new academic year begins, new UNMC students from all colleges, campuses and programs are welcomed with a variety of orientation activities.

While UNMC’s colleges and programs organize their own fall orientations, UNMC’s Division of Student Success hosts a UNMC-wide orientation for new students that focuses on resources and skills that support success while studying at UNMC.

The following activities take place in August and early September:

Tours of the Center for Healthy Living: Wednesday, August 21, 8-9 a.m.

Center staff provide tours of the facility and demonstrate activities such as intramural sports and fitness classes. Any member of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community is also welcome to take a tour. The Center for Healthy Living is located in the Student Life Center.

Orientation for new students: Wednesday, August 21, 9-11:30 a.m.

The New Student Orientation event is supported by the UNMC Office of Academic Success and is held simultaneously for all new UNMC students. Presentations include a welcome video from campus leaders, an overview of prioritizing well-being during and after college, and opportunities to connect with UNMC leaders.

Student participation fair: Wednesday, August 21, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

UNMC is home to more than 100 registered student organizations on its five campuses in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and Scottsbluff. After orientation, students can connect with student organization members and leadership and sign up for activities. Lunch is provided. This event will take place in the Center for Healthy Living activity plazas.

Tours of the McGoogan Health Sciences Library: 03.09.2024, 11am–2pm

Library staff are available in Wittson Hall (Level 6) to provide tours to new students.

Orientation event on interprofessional training: Wednesday, August 21, 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

Students will participate in a panel discussion on current health professions to learn about the importance of interprofessional teamwork and communication, and will engage in a series of exercises that illustrate the challenges to successful collaboration between team members in modern health care.

#WeAreUNMC BBQ: 28 August, 3:30-6:00 p.m.

UNMC faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the campus BBQ at the Center for Healthy Living activity plazas. (Note that the event has been moved indoors from the Ruth & Bill Scott Student Plaza.) Participants with a UNMC ID card can enjoy free food and giveaways (while supplies last), music and yard games.

Email UNMC’s Division of Student Success if you have questions about new student orientation activities.
