North Las Vegas firefighters save newborn after cardiac arrest and now share their solidarity

A young couple is grateful that a group of firefighters saved their daughter’s life.

Kyle and Heather Adkison were at home when Heather went into premature labor on June 30.

Baby Grace was born unexpectedly prematurely and spent 15 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University Hospital.

Kyle and Heather were the only ones at home when their daughter was born.

They said they knew immediately that something was wrong.

“I don’t know if we set a world record for fastest labor and delivery, but it was pretty quick,” says Kyle.

The North Las Vegas Fire Department responded to a call that none of them will ever forget.

“She had a bluish discoloration, then her face popped up and she stopped breathing,” Kyle said.

Grace went into cardiac arrest as Kyle performed CPR when firefighters arrived. Firefighter Jesus Garcia said it was a team effort.

“The most important thing we do is dry the baby,” Garcia said. “We try to suction the baby’s airway, we provide ventilation, we do CPR and that ultimately got the baby’s heart rate up.”

“It all depends on training,” he said. Grace was by far the youngest patient he treated for cardiac arrest, and the outcome was ideal.

Grace spent two weeks in the hospital and has fully recovered.

Doctors at UMC diagnosed her with HIE (hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy), which is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain before or shortly after birth.

“She would be dead if they hadn’t done what they did. They (the NLVFD) showed up and brought her back.”

Grace and her parents were reunited with the team that helped save her life.

Each firefighter who took part in the operation received a special award for his services.

This call turned strangers into family members.
