It’s not uncommon for student-athletes to play multiple sports in high school, but it’s rare in college.
The North Carolina Tar Heels were fortunate to have a player in Julius Peppers, a legendary two-sport athlete who played both football and basketball. UNC currently has Kaleb Cost, who is a defensive back on the football team and an outfielder in the baseball program.
North Carolina has also been linked to another two-sport athlete in the class of 2025, Shamarius Peterkin, the 6-foot-2 wide receiver who plays basketball and football for Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Peterkin named the Tar Heels, NC State and Virginia Tech as his three recruiting finalists. Peterkin also made a decision over the weekend – and unfortunately, UNC is not one of them.
On Friday, August 16, Peterkin committed to the Hokies in the recruiting portal. This came as a surprise to many who thought Peterkin would stay in-state for his next chapter.
Snook is officially a Hokie
With a flair for drama, Peterkin tossed both UNC and NC State caps to the crowd.
Big win for Virginia Tech as Snook will play both football and basketball. https://t.co/UEYzTBDk7v pic.twitter.com/j069vijKsp

The North Carolina men’s basketball program did not allow Peterkin to play both basketball and football, but Virginia Tech did, which was a major factor in his decision.
Peterkin’s out-of-state commitment isn’t a huge loss for North Carolina, as the team has already signed 14 players for the 2025 class, including 3-star wide receiver Evan Haynes. However, had Peterkin chosen UNC, this would have been the Tar Heels’ fourth commitment of a 4-star player.
