We don’t yet know if or when Republican Josh Hawley and Democratic challenger Lucas Kunce will debate each other in their race for U.S. Senate in Missouri, but they briefly faced off Thursday morning at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia.
Hawley was equipped with a microphone and was being followed by a television camera when he found Kunce in the crowd at the Governor’s Ham Breakfast.
“Where is he? Lucas Kunce! Lucas Kunce! We’re going to debate today,” Hawley asked.
“How are you, man?” asked Kunce.
“We will discuss today,” asked Hawley.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Kunce.
“We’re going to debate today? You don’t know that? I read your bullshit letter to the Farm Bureau. Are you going to sue the Farm Bureau? Come on,” Hawley said.
“You’re really obsessed with this stunt. You’re really obsessed with this stunt,” Kunce said.
“Are you going to debate with me today?” Hawley said.
“They’ve already gotten the Farm Bureau and the State Fair in trouble,” Kunce said.
Hawley repeatedly challenged Kunce to a debate with him at a barbecue joint in Sedalia, while Kunce repeatedly said he had already agreed to five televised debates, which Hawley had not yet done.
Some time after this confrontation, Governor Mike Parson told those present at breakfast that politicians must remember that they are in the service of the public and that it is not just about them.
“It’s not just about them. It’s about us, and sometimes they want to be the center of attention just to show that they’re here in town,” Parson said.
It is unclear whether Parsons’ comments were a subtle rebuke to Hawley, Kunce or both.
The decision on the US Senate seat in Missouri will be made on Tuesday, November 5th.
