Montgomery County police officer found guilty of involvement in January 6 insurrection

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Maryland (DC News Now) — A Montgomery County police officer has been found guilty for his involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington, D.C., when he threw a smoke bomb at outnumbered police, according to officials.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) in DC announced in a press release on Friday that 25-year-old Justin Lee was convicted of two serious crimes. The Associated Press reported that Lee lit the smoke bomb and threw it at a group of police officers, hitting one of the officers’ riot shields and filling the area with smoke.

Investigators identified Lee after reviewing video of the archway leading to the Capitol’s Lower West Exterior Door. The USAO said that area – also referred to as the “tunnel” – was “the scene of some of the most violent attacks on police” during the insurrection.

MCPD said that Lee has not performed any police duties since being placed on leave following the shooting. He was relieved of his police powers during the trial; and following his indictment, Lee is no longer an employee of the MCPD.
