DRIVERS ARE ASKED TO BE CAREFUL FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROAD

As students in Missouri return to school this week, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to watch for students.

Drivers should expect changes in traffic patterns – school buses, parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will be on the road with other motorists, disrupting the morning and afternoon rush hours. An increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic is also expected.

Missouri law requires drivers on two-lane roads to stop when a school bus stops while children are boarding or disembarking and display warning signals before they can approach and follow the bus. However, on a four-lane highway, you are only required to stop when following the bus.

If you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and obey traffic laws. Children may be unaware of traffic and run into the road unexpectedly.

Parents should talk to their children about how to get to school safely by bus, on foot or by car. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and obey traffic laws.
