Man in protective vest arrested after chase and attempted car theft in Pittsburgh

A McKeesport man wearing a body armor is charged with fleeing from police, attempted carjacking and causing a traffic accident after leading an Allegheny County sheriff’s deputy on a chase Wednesday night.

Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus said the pursuit went from Pittsburgh’s Beltzhoover neighborhood to Banksville Road.

Kraus said in a written statement released Thursday that the incident began around 8:30 p.m. the previous evening when an officer on routine patrol observed Tyler Stewart, 22, driving at a high rate of speed on Bausman Street. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop.

The officer pursued Stewart’s Jeep Cherokee along Saw Mill Run Boulevard and Crane Avenue to Banksville Road, where the Jeep collided with another vehicle at the intersection of McMonagle Avenue.

The driver of the other car suffered a broken pelvis in the accident, Kraus said.

Stewart then fled on foot into the parking lot of Banksville Plaza, where he attempted to pull an elderly man from a car, according to the sheriff, but was pursued by two witnesses.

Stewart crossed Banksville Road before being approached by witnesses and taken into custody by the deputy sheriff and city police officers.

Kraus said Stewart was wearing a body armor vest. He said a handgun and an assault weapon were found in the Jeep, both with loaded magazines.

“While we cannot say for sure what this man’s intentions were last night, his clothing and the items seized from his car suggest that he is an extremely dangerous individual who poses a significant threat to the safety of our community,” Kraus said Thursday.

Stewart was taken to the Allegheny County Jail where he was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a permit, unauthorized possession of a body armor, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault with a vehicle and numerous other traffic violations.

He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on August 26.

He also faces arrest warrants from Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties.
