Man from Virginia: Chase ends in tragedy: A man from Virginia’s 16-month-old daughter is killed in an accident
A tragic incident occurred with a Virginia Beach Man who kidnapped his three children late Wednesday, fled from police and crashed his SUV on the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The crash led to the death of his 16 month old daughter and injuries to his two other children and himself.
Dana Plummer, 36, of Virginia Beach, allegedly stabbed a woman and a child to death before fleeing with his 7-year-old son, 5-year-old son and 16-month-old daughter. Virginia State Police released a Amber Alert This led to a chase that ended with an accident on the outer loop of Interstate 495 at the Branch Avenue on-ramp at around 9:05 a.m.
A black SUV with significant front-end damage and deployed airbags was seen at the scene. Plummer’s 16-month-old daughter, Zariyah Plummer, was seriously injured and later died in hospital. Virginia Beach police confirmed her death and expressed their condolences.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and loved ones who are grieving this morning,” said Police Chief Paul Neudigate. “This is an unimaginable tragedyand on behalf of the VBPD, I express our deepest condolences to those affected by this loss.”
The other two children were also injured and taken to the hospital, where they are in stable condition. Plummer himself sustained injuries and is currently in police custody at the hospital. Lt. Col. Adam Stachurski of the Maryland State Police mentioned during a press conference that charges against Plummer could be complicated because of the incident crossing state lines.
After the accident, Plummer was charged with aggravated assault and child abduction.Inducement of a minor to commit crimes and domestic violence by Virginia Beach police. It is unclear if he has legal representation. All charges related to the toddler’s death, which occurred in Maryland, are being brought by Maryland authorities.
The incident began when a local resident recognized Plummer’s vehicle from the Amber Alert and notified police, after which Virginia State Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop in Fairfax County, Virginia, at around 8:45 a.m. Plummer, however, refused to stop and initiated a Chase with the police which continued into Maryland. He eventually lost control and crashed as he exited the Beltway at Branch Avenue.
“The loss of a child – no matter what kind – is, to say the least, heartbreaking,” said Lieutenant Colonel Stachurski during the press conference.
Virginia Beach police have released more details about the events that led to the Amber Alert. Plummer allegedly stabbed the children’s mother to death before taking the children around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
“The children are believed to have been abducted by Dana Demetrius Plummer, 36, and may have been traveling in a black 2024 Honda Passport SUV with temporary Virginia plates: 37555OR,” Virginia State Police said. “The children are believed to be in extreme danger and were last seen at Jay Are Court in Virginia Beach.”
Both victims of the stabbing were hospitalized and are reportedly in stable condition. Authorities warned motorists in Maryland to expect significant traffic delays and urged anyone with relevant information to contact police.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Given the location of the accident and the nature of the fatality, Maryland authorities will assume all charges related to the fatal accident.
