Madison man charged with drunk driving after hitting light pole in Monona

MONONA, Wis. (WMTV) – A Madison man faces drunken driving charges after he crashed into a light pole and was injured in Monona, according to Monona police, Monona police reported Thursday.

Police said Monona firefighters removed the man from his vehicle after the car crash was reported just before 11:40 a.m. in the 6300 block of Monona Drive. Paramedics and police officers cared for the driver until he was taken to a local hospital. Police said the 26-year-old is expected to recover.

MOPD determined that the driver accelerated after stopping in the lane and crashed into the city’s light pole. The man was charged with drunk driving with suspected drug abuse, police said.

The police department said the suspect is currently serving a prison sentence after being released from the Sheboygan County Jail, where he was charged with a felony.

Northbound traffic was diverted while police investigated the accident, the MOPD added.
