Madison County residents inducted into Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame – The Madison Record
MADISON – An outstanding group of seniors, including residents from Madison County, were honored with induction into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame at a recent ceremony in Prattville.
Since 1983, the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame has honored and recognized Alabama citizens age 60 or older for their outstanding contributions to the lives of older members of their local communities. The Hall of Fame also recognizes Alabama seniors age 100 or older and couples married 65 years or more.
“This is the only major event in Alabama where individuals are officially honored and recognized each year for their selfless dedication and commitment to serving the elderly in their community,” said Jean Brown, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Senior Services.
“We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Alabama citizens selected for the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame award,” Brown said.
“I am very pleased that our nominee, Mrs. Dorothy Harris, has been recognized by the Alabama Department of Senior Services,” said Levoneia Ayers. Ayers serves as the director of the Madison Senior Center. At the ceremony in Prattville, Harris received a pin in honor of her 100th birthday.
Howard Polin of Madison County was also honored as a centenarian.
“Madison County was one of 21 counties that participated this year,” Ayers said. “As far as I know, this is our first year participating, but it definitely won’t be our last.” Ayers said the awards ceremony was well attended and there was standing room only.
The 2024 Senior Citizens Hall of Fame inductees include Michael C. Gillespie of Huntsville. Gillespie was a long-time commissioner on the Madison County Commission. During his career, he held positions that allowed him to help the senior community in his area. As chairman of the Madison County Commission, he found funds for the county to give raises to its retiring employees.
The Alabama Department of Senior Services also recognizes couples who have been married for 65 years or more. Madison County residents who have reached this milestone include Jesse and Ella Johnson Jr., Thomas and Margaret Leavell, and Howard and Diana Polin.
