REXBURG – A man died Thursday after falling into the Snake River in Madison County.
Bonneville County Coroner Rick Taylor identified the man as Kelly Cheney, 70. It is unclear where he lived, but Taylor told EastIdahoNews.com he was from the eastern Idaho area. He died by drowning, Taylor added.
The incident occurred at 2 p.m. The Madison County Emergency Management Center received calls reporting a person had fallen into the Snake River west of the Twin Bridges Campground, according to a news release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Several emergency services were dispatched to the area to attempt a water rescue.
At 2:40 p.m., Navy officials found Cheney in the river, about a mile west of the campground.
Life-saving measures were administered and Cheney was transported by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
He died in hospital as a result of the incident.
Investigators believe he accidentally fell into the water while fishing, the press release states.
