According to a new bill proposed by the Las Vegas City Council, street vendors would be required to have a health permit, a health card and a business license.
A sidewalk vendor is any person who sells food, beverages or goods on a public sidewalk or footpath.
This bill, sponsored by Councilwoman Olivia Diaz, would not apply to food trucks, as they fall under the definition of mobile food vendors under the city’s municipal code.
According to the bill, sidewalk vendors are not allowed to operate within 150 meters of a special event designated by the city government.
Street vendors are not allowed to sell their wares within 1,000 feet of casinos, pedestrian malls or the Downtown Entertainment Overlay District, a part of downtown that the city is trying to redevelop for commercial use.
During school hours, sellers are not allowed to operate within 300 meters of a school.
Anyone violating the ordinance faces fines of up to $1,000 and/or misdemeanor charges.
Senate Bill 92, passed in the 2023 Nevada legislative session, required all municipalities in Clark and Washoe Counties to enact sidewalk vendor ordinances.
The proposed Las Vegas ordinance comes after Henderson and North Las Vegas passed their own ordinances.
Most notably, Henderson’s regulations are the strictest: they prohibit any sidewalk vendor from operating at one location for more than 30 minutes at a time.
The vote on the ordinance in Las Vegas is scheduled for August 21.
