King adds two more watchlists to Preseason Honors – Football — Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

THE APARTMENTS – Georgia Tech junior quarterback Haynes King (Longview, Texas/Longview HS) added two more to his list of preseason accolades Thursday when he was named to the official nominees list for the Manning Award and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, both awards honoring college football’s best quarterback.

King, who was already on the official preseason candidate lists for the 2024 Maxwell Award (National Player of the Year) and the Davey O’Brien Award (Quarterback) and finished fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year voting, totaled 3,729 yards on offense (2,842 passes, 737 carries) and 37 touchdowns (27 passes, 10 carries) in his first season as the Yellow Jackets’ starting quarterback in 2023.

He was one of only two players in the Power Five Conference with at least 2,800 passing yards, 700 rushing yards, 25 touchdown passes and 10 touchdown runs in 2023, joining Heisman Trophy winner and eventual No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft Jayden Daniels of LSU. He also became only the fourth player in the Atlantic Coast Conference since 2000 to reach those highs in a single season, joining Clemson’s Deshawn Watson (2015), Louisville’s Lamar Jackson (2016 and 2017) and Virginia Tech’s Jerod Evans (2016).

King is one of seven Yellow Jackets on the waiting list for national awards this preseason. He is joined by RB Jamal Hayneswho is on the Maxwell Award watch list along with King, as well as on the watch lists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Doak Walker Award (running back) and the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player), OL Weston Franklin on the Outland Trophy Watch List (Inside Lineman), PK Aidan Birr on the Lou Groza Award Watch List (placekicker), WR Leo Blackburn and DL Sylvain Yondjouen on the Comeback Player of the Year Watchlist and DB Clayton Powell-Lee as a candidate for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy (Community Service).
