Kidnapping of three children in Virginia Beach leads to fatal accident in Prince George’s County
CAMP SPRINGS, Maryland. – Maryland State Police are currently investigating a fatal crash in Prince George’s County that left a 16-month-old baby dead.
The deceased victim was identified as Za’riyah Plummer, 16 months old, of Virginia Beach. She was flown by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, where hospital personnel pronounced her dead.
Two other youths were transported by ground to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, for medical treatment. They are 7-year-old Zayin Plummer and 5-year-old Zayir Plummer, both of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Dana Plummer, 36, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was transported by ground to Capital Region Medical Center for medical treatment. Plummer was the driver of a black Honda Passport SUV involved in the crash. All three children were in his vehicle at the time of the crash. Charges are pending the completion of the investigation and consultation with the Prince George’s County District Attorney.
Maryland State Police received a call for assistance from Virginia State Police shortly before 9:00 a.m. regarding an active Amber Alert requested by Virginia Beach Police. Virginia State Police requested assistance with a chase in Maryland.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m., a black Honda Passport SUV crossed the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and continued north on I-495. It attempted to take the ramp from I-495 northbound onto Route 5/Branch Avenue southbound, where it struck other vehicles and its vehicle overturned. Forestville Barracks officers arrived at the scene. Three vehicles, including the black Honda SUV, were involved in the crash. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the crash investigation. The Virginia State Police is leading the chase investigation. The Virginia Beach Police Department coordinated the Amber Alert with the Virginia State Police, which was issued at 2:00 a.m. today.
Maryland State Police were assisted at the scene by officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department and personnel from the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Services. Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department and forensic science technicians are assisting with the ongoing investigation. Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration assisted with lane closures and detours.
