Kangaroos displace wombats from top spot
The Wombats retain the important double chance to face Girgarre in a qualifying final on Saturday 31 August, at the Kangaroos’ home ground.
Lancaster lost its first game of the season by two goals to Nagambie two weeks ago after 13 consecutive wins and lost again by two goals to Shepparton East on Saturday.
In the second round this year, the Wombats beat the Eagles 63-35.
Lancaster and Girgarre have only played each other once this season, in round nine when the Wombats won 68-44.
Against Shepparton East on Saturday, the Wombats led by two goals after the first quarter, but the game was tied at halftime.
Lancaster only managed four goals in the third period and, despite winning the final quarter (15-13), lost by two goals (41-43).
Millie Hill and Charlie Westerveld played in defence throughout the game, while Lexi Thomas and Chicquita Vick (28 goals) were in goal.
Chelcee Schubert shared the midfield role with captain Zoe Hayes, Cassie-Lee Westley, Jadeja Davies and Jaleigha Hart.
– Girgarre’s rise to the top of the ladder was capped off by a 13-goal win over Stanhope which ended the Lions’ hopes of reaching the final.
Stanhope, like its senior football team, were in sixth place before the round and needed a win or a positive result to reach the final.
None of that happened and the Lions finished the season one game outside the finals.
Nine goals in the first period by Jacqui Gahan gave Girgarre a five-goal lead, which was extended to nine goals by halftime when Kim Hanna got going in tandem with Gahan.
After halftime, Stanhope more than kept up and were only four goals behind Jemma-Marie Wright, who kicked 11 goals in the final quarter and finished the game with 24 goals.
Girgarre’s 52-39 result came about because they used all ten players on the roster: Darcie Stammers supported key defenders Abigail Sergienko and Allana Adams, while in the midfield Sheree Starling played with Holly Nelson in the center position.
– Merrigum finished their season in tenth place on the leaderboard with five wins, losing to the in-form Nagambie combination 57-25.
The Bulldogs were eight points behind at half-time, and 18 after a first half that saw Nagambie score 32 goals. In the final quarter, Shanae Doherty made a big impact with Jade Christou in goal, while Gabbey Beveridge moved into defence alongside Maddy Wilson.
