I was thrilled when Vice President Kamala Harris, riding a still-unbroken wave of enthusiasm, chose Milwaukee as her first stop on her presidential campaign trail on July 23.
It’s been a great summer for the city I’m honored to lead. In early July, Milwaukee hosted the Republican National Convention, an important first step in bringing great economic opportunity here. Harris’ visit and the Republican National Convention reflect a simple political reality: In the last four presidential elections, the candidate who won Wisconsin also won the White House, and the path to victory in Wisconsin goes through Milwaukee.
So there I stood on the tarmac on July 23 with my wife and six-year-old daughters, waiting to greet the woman who will be our next president.
No doubt the vice president had other, more pressing priorities that day — like getting to her rally on time — but she was charming and seemed at ease with us, especially my girls. Then she said something to me that I will never forget: “Your girls and girls like you — they are the reason I do what I do.”

I believe that. In this absolutely crucial election year, Harris is not only working for my daughters and girls like my daughters, she is working for Milwaukee and our entire country.
Just look at Biden and Harris’ record:
- 4,000 Wisconsin residents have had their student loan debt forgiven, giving them more money in their pockets to pay their bills or put food on the table for their children.
- Thanks to new sidewalks and bike lanes funded by the administration’s bipartisan infrastructure bill, Milwaukee residents will soon be able to safely walk or bike to school, work or the doctor on the 6th Street corridor.
- Lead pipes have been removed in more families so that children have safe and clean drinking water.
- Employment in Wisconsin is at an all-time high, and with Microsoft’s investment in Racine, they can expect even more jobs soon.
There is no doubt that our city is better off today than it was four years ago. And there is no doubt that Harris will continue to fight for the betterment of our city, our state and our country in the Oval Office.
She is the only person in this election who will fight for what matters most to us in Wisconsin: lowering costs, preserving our democracy, and protecting women’s reproductive freedom.
After all, the Republican nominee knows nothing about what Americans care about most. Former President Donald Trump is only out for himself and his billionaire donors. He and his MAGA allies would raise costs for working families through another tax break for billionaires, while simultaneously targeting Social Security and Medicare and ending the ACA, which would drive up health care costs.
Trump will not fight for Milwaukee. He called Milwaukee a “terrible city.” And as on many other issues, he couldn’t be more wrong. Milwaukee is strong, and its power will put Harris right in the White House.
With Harris as our next president, my daughters will grow up in a world where the president not only fights for them, but looks like them. They will watch her and see themselves in her.
Harris will show my girls what is possible for them – that people from all walks of life and backgrounds are welcome in this country.
They will grow up knowing that as a city and a nation we are more than the sum of our differences.
Because what does it mean for our daughters across the country to see themselves in our nation’s highest office? Everything.
As the Democratic National Convention begins this week in Chicago, I fully support Harris. Last month, on the tarmac in Milwaukee, Harris thanked my daughters for giving up their time for me while I campaigned for them. Well, it will all be worth it if we elect Harris as the 47th President of the United States.
Johnson is mayor of Milwaukee and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention taking place this week in Chicago.
