ATLANTA – Badcock Home Furniture & More, with more than two dozen stores in Georgia, announced on Facebook last week that it is closing all of its more than 370 stores in eight southeastern states.
Badcock has operated a store in Statesboro for many years on Northside Drive, just west of East Main St. Badcock said all of his stores will be closed by the end of October. The store’s sign on the front of Northside Drive reads: “Closing Store. Everything Must Go. 30 to 50% Off.”
Badcock’s announcement came after parent company Conn’s, based in Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last month.
“We would like to express our sincere thanks for being a valued customer of Badcock Home Furniture & More,” the company wrote on Facebook. “Regrettably, we are ceasing operations and all stores will be closing in the coming months.”
In the bankruptcy filing, Conn officials said the company owes creditors more than $100 million. The company’s financial difficulties are being felt across the furniture retail industry as sales, which peaked during the pandemic, have declined since.
In addition to Statesboro, Badcock’s Georgia locations are scattered throughout the state, from Lakeland in southern Georgia near the Florida border up to the Atlanta metropolitan area, east to the Augusta area, and up through northwest Georgia to Fort Oglethorpe near the Tennessee border.
Conn’s now has seven stores in Georgia, most of them in the Atlanta area, but also in Columbus and Augusta.
Badcock employs around 1,200 people, all of whom will lose their jobs when the stores close at the end of October.
The company provided answers to “frequently asked questions” in its Facebook post to guide customers through the process.
Although Badcock no longer offers finance, customers who financed their purchases can still pay online, by phone, by mail or in store. Items can still be purchased depending on stock levels in the company’s warehouses.
