LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – Nebraska football will be a “West Side Story” in 2024. The Huskers are moving their home field to the west side of Memorial Stadium, which is unsettling news for some ticket holders. But there is a strategy behind the decision, as the press box and coaches’ seats are located on the 6th floor on the west side.
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said the Huskers began evaluating the change in 2023. The switch will take place before the 2024 season, when helmet communication between coaches and players will begin and the use of tablets on the sidelines will be allowed.
“The teams that communicate the best on game day are going to win,” Rhule said, noting that moving opponents to the east sideline, where Nebraska’s band and student section is located, should be an advantage.
“We’re a very nice group,” Rhule said. “Nebraska is nice. But for two hours, three hours, four hours, we want to please them.”
Rhule adds that the convict crew is also deployed on the east sideline, which can be a nuisance on game days.
“The students have the opportunity to impact the game. And our band, which is fantastic, has the opportunity to impact the game.”
Nebraska opens the season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. It will be the Huskers’ first Week 1 home game since 2019.
